English missionary William Ward, while mentioning Hothi Vidyalankar in his book published in 1811, has said that students from all over the country used to come to study in his Gurukul. Everyone respected Hothiji by the name Vidyalankar.

Hothi Vidyalankar was born in the year 1740 and died in the year 1810, which means he was much before Savitribai, the first lady teacher in modern India. Seeing his proficiency in Sanskrit grammar, Veda philosophy, Ayurveda etc., he was awarded the title of Vidyalankar in Kashi.

She was born in Bengal, her father was a elite Brahmin family. She lived in her father’s house even after marriage. Her Father was teacher, he gave him an education and then she started her own Sanskrit school. But once her husband died and her father also fell into trouble. After the Draught of 1770, she lost her students and on the suggestion of learned Brahmins, she went to Kashi pilgrimage, Banaras.

Here she attempted to learn a ‘ Smriti Shastra and other hindu scriptures. Hothi Vidyalankar would dress like men, shave her head and keep a shikha, attend debates with male Hindu pundits[vedic scholors]. A few decades after the birth of Hothi Vidyalankar Manjari Devi, another female teacher Was born. She was also an elite Brahmin of Bengal. She was an expert in Ayurveda and had established a school for girls. He was also honored with the title of Vidyalankar.
